One message that lottery commissions seem to be relying on more now is that even though it’s a game, you should still feel good about buying a ticket because you’re helping the state, the kids or whatever. And, finally, it also obscures the fact that the jackpots for most games are very high, which means they have to be paid out in lump sums.
